Mackinac Bridge, closed for falling ice, now reopened

The Mackinac Bridge, closed earlier this morning due to falling ice, is now reopen, according to the Mackinac Bridge Authority .

“Safe travels, everyone!,” a post at 1 p.m. said .

Earlier in the day, falling ice and hazardous conditions which have formed from recent fog freezing to the bridge’s towers and cables had closed the bridge, according to a news release.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area, officials said .

Later, officials said they were trying to shake some of the ice loose and were hoping the expected sunshine helps as well.

Ice could be seen falling as a truck crosses the bridge on Monday morning.

Today it is expected to be a high of 33 degrees in Mackinaw City with clouds yielding to some sun. Mackinac Island has a similar forecast.

Metro Detroit, on the other hand, could reach a high of 41 on Monday and even in the 50s later this week .

But, getting, getting back to the Mighty Mac, if you love it, small pieces of vintage steel grating from the deck of Mackinac Bridge are available for purchase .
