Mike’s Famous Ham Place, a southwest Detroit spot known as a place for ham, soups and breakfast, is listed for sale.
First reported by BridgeDetroit, the owners are looking to retire.
While the business and building are for sale, owner Mike Muftari on Monday morning made clear that the restaurant is still open. According to the real estate listing through Lambrecht Realty, the asking price is $545,000.
Known for its piled-high ham sandwiches and bowls of bean and split pea soups, Mike’s Famous Ham Place has been around for 50 years.
“I am trying to retire,” Muftari said Monday morning. “And the place is for sale … not closed. “Since 1974, Muftari has been serving customers, carving ham off the bone with each order.Decades ago, business was hopping with a lot of industry in the area, Muftari said.
“There was Cadillac, mill companies, the railroad … a lot of industry,” Muftari said.
The small white and gray building, 772 square feet, according to the real estate listing, was originally a Lile’s Sandwich Shop. Lile’s also had a location on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn. Muftari told BridgeDetroit that he kept the original name for five years before renaming it “Mike’s Famous Ham Place.”
