Gas prices hit 2024 high in Michigan, after skyrocketing last week

DETROIT (WWJ) — Gas prices have skyrocketed up 26 cents from last week to an average of $3.26 a gallon of regular unleaded. That’s 32 cents more than at this time last month, but still 5 cents less than this time last year.

WWJ’s Beth Fisher reports experts say higher gas demand and tighter supply have contributed to elevated pump prices.

The continued shutdown of BP’s Whiting, Indiana refinery, which lost power on Feb. 2, is contributing to higher prices in the Midwest region.

“Pretty much every factor you could have contributing to higher prices, they’re in play right now,” AAA Michigan’s Adrienne Woodland said.

Woodland says if demand continues to increase, alongside higher crude oil prices, drivers could see pump prices continue to rise.

The highest prices are in Lansing at $3.28 a gallon, and the cheapest are in Marquette at $3.19 a gallon.

In Metro Detroit, the best price Monday morning was $2.88 at the following locations, according to GasBuddy.com :
