Michigan’s gun laws will change on February 13, 2024. From then, people without a Concealed Pistol License (CPL), MCOLES, or Federal Firearms License (FFL) must apply for a Purchase Permit before buying or transferring a gun. This can be done at any Michigan Police Department or Sheriff’s Office.
The Purchase Permit application process includes a background check. Applicants must be 18 or older and have a valid Michigan Driver’s License or State ID with their current address. The application costs $6, payable by cash or check.
Non-US born applicants need to provide proof of citizenship. This can be a valid US passport, Certificate of Citizenship, Naturalization Certificate, or Green Card.
Applications for a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) are available at the Wayne County Clerk’s office. The Dearborn Police Department does not accept these applications. More details on CPL guidelines are on the State of Michigan Firearms webpage.
