19-year-old driver dead, two passengers injured after stolen Kia crashes during Southfield police pursuit

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) – A police chase in Southfield ended in tragedy after the driver of an alleged stolen vehicle died after crashing into a fence on Tuesday evening.

The Southfield Police Department said two 17-year-old female passengers were also injured in the wreck, which occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13th.

According to authorities, officers initiated a traffic stop on a Kia that was reported stolen at Westhampton and Evergreen Road.

The driver of the Kia, identified as a 19-year-old male, fled the scene, but immediately struck a fence on Evergreen between Westhampton and Westover.

The man was rushed to a local hospital were he was later pronounced dead, the department said.

Two passengers, both 17-year-old girls, were also taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Southfield police say the an investigation into the incident remains under investigation. No other details were immediately available.
