Driver pulls over on Southfield Freeway to tell MSP troopers on traffic stop that passenger had been shot by another driver

DETROIT (WWJ) — The search is on for a suspect who reportedly opened fire on the Southfield Freeway early Thursday morning, hitting a Farmington woman in the leg.

It happened around 2:15 a.m. on northbound M-39 near the ramp to I-96 on Detroit’s west side, according to Michigan State Police as troopers were pulled over for a traffic stop.

Authorities say a 32-year-old driver from Livonia pulled up behind the troopers to report their car had been involved in a shooting on the Southfield as they were exiting onto I-96 and a car pulled up alongside them and fired one shot.

The bullet went through the front passenger door and hit a 27-year-old Farmington woman in the right thigh, but did not penetrate her skin, according to MSP.

No other details surrounding the shooting have been released and a possible motive remains unclear.

“We are extremely fortunate that the passenger was not seriously hurt in this incident.” said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw.

Shaw told WWJ investigators returned to the freeway Thursday afternoon to continue searching for evidence in the daylight.
