63-year-old prisoner found dead in Dearborn Heights Police Department jail cell

DEARBORN HEIGHTS (WWJ) – An investigation is underway in Dearborn Heights after a 63-year-old prisoner died in their jail cell on Thursday night.

According to officials, the 63-year-old man from Inkster was being held on a felony operating while intoxicated (OWI) charge the evening of Feb. 15.

Dearborn Heights police officers were preforming a routine cell check around 8 p.m. when the man was found unresponsive.

Officials stated via WDIV that police immediately began emergency care on the prisoner until firefighters arrived at the scene. The man was rushed to a Metro Detroit hospital where he was pronounced dead.

At this time, the man’s cause of death remains unknown and under investigation with both the DHPD and Michigan State Police.

“This is truly an unfortunate situation,” said Dearborn Heights Mayor Bill Bazzi via WDIV . “We look forward to learning the results of the ongoing investigations by both the DHPD and the MSP, which will be released to the public as soon as they are completed. In the meantime, we offer our sincere condolences to the family of this gentleman”.
