Warren woman faces charges after 2-year-old boy she was babysitting finds her gun, shoots himself

WARREN (WWJ) — A 42-year-old Warren woman is facing charges after a child she was babysitting picked up her gun and shot himself in the stomach over the weekend.

April Faith Green is a certified social worker with a degree from the University of Michigan, according to WWJ’s Tim Pamplin, reporting from the defendant’s arraignment on Monday.

Green is charged with second degree child abuse, a firearm safe storage violation, and two counts of felony firearm.

Warren Police said their officers were called to a home on Edgemont, near Stephens and Hoover Rd., at around 6 p.m. Saturday about a toddler who had shot himself.

When they arrived, officers and a Warren Fire crew found a 2-and-a-half-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to his stomach area. Paramedics rushed the child to the hospital while police blocked intersections along the way.

Police said Green is a CPL holder who owned two handguns, which were seized during the investigation.

“While babysitting, it is believed that the babysitter left the handguns unsecured in an area accessible to the child,” the Warren PD said, in a news release. “The (child) was able to access one of the handguns and shoot himself in the stomach.”
