Tigers’ Double-A affiliate wins second consecutive league title

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — In the shadow of Detroit’s improbable playoff push, some Tigers’ minor leaguers won their league title.

The Erie Seawolves , the team’s Double-A affiliate, won the Eastern League title Tuesday night with a 3-2 win over the Somerset Patriots, sweeping the best-of-three series. It is the second consecutive title for the SeaWolves, with a roster littered with former Whitecaps and key Tigers prospects.

Detroit Tigers call up top pitching prospect Jackson Jobe

Austin Bergner was the star of the game. The righty threw six scoreless innings, racking up 8 strikeouts to earn the win. Bergner was drafted in the ninth round of the 2019 MLB Entry Draft and split time between Erie and Triple-A Toledo this season, along with three starts for the Whitecaps.

The other star was Chris Meyers, the hard-hitting utility player who has found his groove in his second season in Erie. Meyers helped the SeaWolves take the lead with RBI singles in his first two at-bats, then helped secure the lead with a diving catch on the left field warning track in the sixth.
