What You Need To Know About The Gordie Howe Bridge Opening

After years of anticipation and pandemic-fueled delays, the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Detroit and Windsor is officially on track to open in Fall 2025. This is a full year after the projected opening date was moved back by COVID-19, further complicated by the differing pandemic restrictions in the U.S., Michigan, and Canada.

Once all the policies that were holding progress back were lifted, the Gordie Howe Bridge construction crew made incredible progress. Officials have confirmed that construction will wrap up by September 2025, according to the Gordie Howe International Bridge team.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is More Than Bridge Work

Initially, the project was estimated to cost $5.7 billion Canadian (CAD), but this has since bumped up to $6.4 billion. Workers have been busy installing 216 cables to connect the massive bridge deck over the Detroit River.

Additionally, crews have been working on the new ramps on I-75 and border inspection facilities. Being an international crossing makes this more than just connecting two sides of a river; it connects two countries, which means a slew of additional facilities are needed to make it function.
