In the 60s and 70s, the king of beers in Michigan was Stroh’s. The brewery used to be right alongside I-75 in Detroit. Do you remember when Stroh’s ruled in Michigan?
Stroh’s Beer
Stroh’s Brewery was an institution in Detroit for 135 years. Detroit brewed Stroh’s until 1985, and in 1999, Pabst Brewing Company purchased the brand. In 2016, Stroh’s returned to being brewed in Michigan by Brew Detroit.
Stroh’s was iconic in Michigan, but struggled to compete in the United States with brands like Anheuser-Busch, Miller, and Coors. The company struggled until it was sold, but people still remember the impact Stroh’s once had on Michigan.
When Stroh’s Beer Was Michigan’s Favorite Brew
I remember watching the old Stroh’s beer TV commercials from the 1970s while watching football with my dad. The catchphrase was, “From One Beer Lover to Another.”
Recently, several posters on the Michigan Reddit page reminisced about the days when Stroh’s beer ruled the state. Below are some of the highlights from that conversation.
That’s a clever use of the old Stroh’s beer boxes because they were made much thicker back then and held up a long time.
I wish this Reddit user had provided a picture of the Stroh’s couch made from beer cases.
I have a feeling a lot of teenagers’ first beer back in the ’60s and ’70s was a Stroh’s.
I bet the guy who was growing the barley for Stroh’s has some great stories to tell.
Many Michiganders were sad to see Stroh’s leave Michigan.
I still miss driving by the old Stroh’s brewery on my way to events in Detroit.
