A “mammoth” problem continues to fester on the city of Detroit’s west side, although demolition could be near.
The owners of the large and long-vacant Mammoth Department Store building at 15401 W. Grand River filed a lawsuit this week against the city, seeking compensation for the city’s “unjust taking” of their equity in the property if the building’s demolition — presently on hold — proceeds.
The owners, businessmen Bahy Hammoud and Gihad Nagi, have been battling in court for months to keep the three-story and approximately 135,000-square-foot building intact, over the desires of city officials and the property’s court-appointed receiver, who claim that the building is structurally unsound and must come down for safety and public health reasons…
