Family Holds Vigil for Detroit Mother Killed in East Side Crash

DETROIT, MICHIGAN — Family and friends came together this weekend to honor the life of Charlene Long-Hardon, a 36-year-old mother of five, who was killed in a car crash on Detroit’s east side earlier this month.

Vigil and Balloon Release

On Saturday, relatives gathered for a balloon release in Long-Hardon’s memory. The crash occurred on Sept. 6 around 2:30 a.m. in the 2100 block of Gratiot Avenue, when the vehicle she was riding in collided with another car before crashing into the Avenue Grill Restaurant.

Long-Hardon died from her injuries, while a man involved in the crash was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

A Mother Remembered

Her family described her as a woman who touched countless lives through kindness and encouragement.

“She inspired everybody that she encountered,” said her mother, Charlene Peoples. “She was always helping and loving and teaching and just pushing and inspiring.”
