Ferris State University Professor with Criminal History Arrested by ICE in Detroit

On November 12, 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Detroit arrested Sumith Gunasekera, a Sri Lankan national. He was working as an associate professor at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan.

Gunasekera has a criminal record that includes convictions for sexual interference with a minor, gross lewdness, uttering death threats, invitation to sexual touching, and disorderly conduct. These incidents occurred in both Canada and the United States.

Gunasekera was first arrested in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, in August 1998 for uttering death threats. He was arrested again days later for sexual offenses involving a minor. He was convicted in November 1998 and sentenced to one month in jail and one year of probation…
