It may be cold out but polar bears don’t mind. The Detroit Zoo has the largest polar bear enclosure in the United States and it’s open in the winter months.

If you love animals and have never been to the zoo during the winter months, the Detroit Zoo is open unlike a lot of other zoos that are in colder climates. The Detroit Zoo is 125 acres housing over 2,000 animals and more than 200 different species.
Thinking of make a trip to the Detroit Zoo, the winter hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, with gates closing at 3:30 p.m. These are the hours now through March with the exceptions of being closed on the major holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day.
There are several indoor exhibits like the Reptile & Amphibian House, plus seeing lots of animals. The wolves and polar bear are much more active in the cold.
Detroit Zoo Features Largest Polar Bear Space in the Country
Michigan is lucky to have the world’s largest polar bear exhibit at the Detroit Zoo. The exhibit is called the Arctic Ring of Life and opened in 2001. The exhibit alone covers 4.2 acres with a massive chilled saltwater pool, and a 70-foot-long polar passage that allows visitors to walk under diving polar bears.
