After JOA Ends, Detroit News Will Publish Its Own Sunday Print Edition, First Time Since 1989

Speculation abounds now that the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press are ending their 36-year-old Joint Operating Agreement (JOA) this month, which for decades allowed both publications to operate independent newsrooms while sharing joint business operations, including advertising and circulation.

Detroit News Editor and Publisher Gary Miles announced Friday that, for the first time since 1989, The News will publish a separate Sunday print edition featuring stories produced solely by its staff. During much of the JOA, the Sunday print edition was published jointly by The News and the Free Press.
