Op-ed: Mary Sheffield’s White Suit

Color has returned to the Detroit mayor’s office. And not just in the context you’re assuming.

During Friday’s Investiture Ceremony, in which a full audience of spectators gathered at The Opera House to watch Detroit’s most recently elected officials publicly take oaths to serve, Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield made a different statement in an all-ivory pantsuit that was difficult to not take notice of.

Perhaps it was strategic, perhaps it was symbolic. With stage lighting against black curtains, most of those sitting before the crowd – city council members, police commissioners, and other speakers – almost blended right in, opting for neutral blacks, greys and navy blues, be it by choice or by required uniform. Sheffield in white tones stood out effortlessly, reflecting all the lights trained toward the stage and pulling the audience’s focus on her at all times, whether seated or standing…
