Detroit’s Museum of Illusions Is a Total Mind-Bender

Your eyes are lying to you, and Detroit has opened a whole museum dedicated to proving it.

The Museum of Illusions debuted in early December in the historic Himelhoch building near Grand Circus Park on Woodward Avenue, and it’s the kind of attraction that makes you question reality while simultaneously taking approximately 500 photos. This is the 67th Museum of Illusions location worldwidea decade-long expansion that’s transformed it into the largest and fastest-growing chain of privately held museums globally. The first location opened in Zagreb, Croatia in 2014. Now the franchise spans continents, with each location featuring exhibits and artwork specific to its city. Detroit’s version doesn’t disappoint.

“We have received the warmest welcome from the Motor City,” CEO Kim Schaefer said at the December preview. “We feel like we are truly family here.”

Every exhibit is designed to make you question your perception

Walking through the Museum of Illusions feels less like traditional museum viewing and more like entering an interactive brain-bending playground. The experience is structured like a path you move through, typically taking about an hour depending on crowding and how long you linger photographing each illusion.
