Michigan OKs hazardous waste landfill expansion despite local outcry

LANSING, MI — Michigan environmental regulators have approved an operating license renewal for a controversial Wayne County hazardous waste landfill, enabling a significant expansion of the site which was opposed by residents, local officials and lawmakers.

On Jan. 29, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) approved the Wayne Disposal Inc. relicensing application, which authorizes the Republic Services-owned landfill near Belleville to continue accepting hazardous waste, PCBs and some radioactive materials while expanding its capacity through vertical build-up.
