In an effort to stand with immigrant communities and protest recent federal actions on that theme, protest organizers called for a nationwide strike on Friday.
The campaign, which is being called a national shutdown, was widely shared on social media in recent days and asked for “No Work. No School. No Shopping. Stop Funding ICE.”
The campaign happens as Congress is considering a final round of federal budget bills that include the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The DHS authority includes the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
