Detroit man charged with stealing $400K in unemployment, rental assistance fraud

DETROIT, MI – A Detroit man is accused of stealing the identities of more than a dozen people to fraudulently obtain more than $400,000 in unemployment benefits and rental assistance.

Stanley Butts, 58, faces various charges for the identity fraud scheme, Michigan Attorney Dana Nessel announced Feb. 5.

The man allegedly used the personal information of at least 12 different people for more than $300,000 in unemployment benefits and more than $100,000 in COVID emergency rental assistance payments, according to a release from the attorney general…
