Wayne County hires lawyer voters rejected as judge to sit in judgment

Wayne County voters made it abundantly clear they didn’t want Daniel Mercier to be a judge. But the man once considered such a liar that he wasn’t fit to be a lawyer nevertheless is sitting in judgment over them.

Mercier, who, in 2024, finished last in the race for a spot on the Wayne County Probate Court bench, was hired Feb. 6 as a juvenile court referee. The gig pays between $102,000 and $140,000 a year and involves hearing cases and making recommendations for their resolution. So, it’s a lot like being a judge — and the pay ain’t too shabby.
