Detroit, Michigan: The Helmet Argument

Dylan Burkett Jr., 15, died on Sunday, March 8, after being rear-ended while stopped on his ATV at the intersection of 6 Mile Road and Kinloch Street in Redford Township, Michigan. According to reports, his death came minutes after he had argued with his father about not wearing a helmet.

The ride itself was illegal since ATVs aren’t permitted on public roads in Michigan without specific provisions and Burkett wasn’t wearing the helmet he’d just been urged to put on.

It’s a brutal combination of circumstances, and not an unusual one. Road riding exposes ATV operators to traffic hazards they’re fundamentally not equipped to handle due to no mirrors, no lights, and a vehicle profile that’s invisible to drivers who aren’t expecting it. Adding no helmet to that equation is how a close call becomes a fatality.
