Detroit’s Long-Abandoned Jail Finally Faces Demolition
It’s all going down at the old Wayne County Jail site in downtown Detroit. Yeah, that thing that felt like it sat there forever half-finished, like a giant reminder of “we’ll get to it eventually.” Well, demolition started months ago according to Fox 2, but now it’s really happening, and thanks to my friend Doug Taylor, I’ve got video from today showing it coming down piece by piece. And honestly, it’s about time.
This whole project has been sitting in that weird limbo for years, but the plan going forward is actually pretty ambitious. Bedrock, which is Dan Gilbert’s development company, wants to turn that space into a 14-acre hub focused on life sciences, tech, and entrepreneurship. So instead of an eyesore, the idea is to build something that actually brings jobs and innovation into downtown Detroit.
What’s Being Planned for the Old Wayne County Jail Site
They’re talking labs, research space, partnerships with Wayne State, and companies like BAMF Health. On paper, it sounds great, like the kind of thing that could really move the city forward.

But right now? It’s still just dust, debris, and a whole lot of “finally.” At least this time, something is actually happening.
