Leadfoot Crackdown: Detroit Rolling Out 312 New Speed Humps

Detroit drivers who like to gun it down side streets are about to hit a lot more bumps. The city plans to install 312 speed‑hump devices on residential blocks this year as it ramps up its traffic‑calming program, focusing on streets near schools, parks and popular cut‑through routes. Neighbors who would rather keep their stretch of pavement flat still have a limited window to push back.

According to the City of Detroit, the Department of Public Works’ 2026 speed‑hump program will add 312 devices and push the total to nearly 11,412 installations since the initiative began in 2016. The DPW page notes the city has fielded more than 23,653 resident requests for speed humps and lays out the criteria used to prioritize blocks, including crash history, housing density and proximity to schools and parks. Some locations that were approved in 2025 but delayed by street resurfacing or utility work are slated to be among the first sites this year.

DPW Director Ron Brundidge told CBS Detroit, “Speed humps have been one tool that we have utilized to effectively address the problem of speeding and reckless driving.” CBS Detroit also reports that residents on affected blocks can request that their street be removed from this year’s list.
