Selling your Detroit home could soon come with a new legal requirement: a certified inspection, completed before closing, with the report handed directly to the buyer—and filed with the city.
The ordinance amendment was requested by Council Member Latisha Johnson and drafted by the City Council’s Legislative Policy Division. It now heads to the Law Department for review before the full council votes, and no timeline for that vote has been set.
If passed, the rule would apply to most sales and transfers of one- or two-family homes in Detroit after the effective date, with limited exemptions. That would cover sales and transfers of one-or two-family residential structures, with limited exemptions.
