A flash flood warning is in effect across several counties in North Carolina’s Piedmont region this morning, with the National Weather Service reporting that between one and two inches of rain had already fallen across much of the area by early morning. An additional one to three inches were expected, bringing a real risk of flash flooding to small creeks, streams, urban areas and low-lying locations throughout the day.
The warning, issued at 6:53 a.m. by the NWS office in Raleigh, covers Alamance, Chatham, Durham, Granville and Orange counties and runs through 11 a.m. Communities affected include Durham, Chapel Hill, Burlington, Hillsborough, Creedmoor, Pittsboro, Siler City, Carrboro, Mebane, Haw River, Swepsonville, Alamance and Stem.
How much rain has fallen across the region
Rainfall totals as of this morning varied widely across the Piedmont Triad and surrounding areas. Burlington recorded the highest total at 4.66 inches, while Greensboro came in at 2.52 inches, Mount Airy at 2.43 inches and Lexington at 2.28 inches. Winston-Salem had received 1.18 inches and Wilkesboro was the lowest of the measured locations at 0.53 inches.
