New RDU parking lot building has creature comforts inside and a garden on top

There’s a new building in Raleigh-Durham International Airport’s big remote parking lot where travelers will soon be able to use a restroom, get a drink or a snack or just get out of the weather to sit and charge their phone or laptop.

And if you glance up at the roof of the glass and steel building, you might be able to see some prairie dropseed or pink muhly grass peaking over the parapet.

This is a “green roof,” the first of its kind at RDU and still a rarity in the Triangle. The airport’s contractors covered most of the 9,000-square-foot flat surface with more than a foot of soil and planted grasses and hardy perennials such as chives and little moonshine yarrow…
