Dunkin’ Donuts employee shot by coworker in North Carolina, police say

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – One person was taken to the hospital and another detained after a shooting on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill on Friday afternoon, police said.

According to the Chapel Hill Police Department, officers responded at 2:47 p.m. to a shooting at the Dunkin’ Donuts on the 1500 block of East Franklin St. When officers arrived on scene, police said they found one person who had been shot.

The shooting occurred after an altercation broke out between two employees, Chapel Hill police said.

The victim was transported to UNC Hospitals with injuries that were considered non-life-threatening, police said. They have since been released from the hospital.

Chapel Hill police identified the person who was detained at the scene as 23-year-old Wesley Shamar Higgins. He was arrested on the following charges:

  • Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury
  • Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill
  • Discharge weapon into occupied property
  • Discharge firearm in city limits
  • Assault by pointing a gun (two counts)
