Durham mother, son nominated for Grammy after making album in memory of late husband, father

DURHAM, N.C. — A mother and son from Durham are headed to Los Angeles this weekend, hoping to bring a Grammy award home to the Triangle.

Mother and son Nnenna and Pierce Freelon are among this year’s Grammy nominees for best Children’s album for their album, “AncestARS.” It celebrates the impact our loved ones who died still have on us and was inspired by Nnenna’s husband and Pierce’s dad, architect Phil Freelon, who died in 2019.

The Freelons tell CBS 17 they believe it’s an important conversation to have with kids.

“I think we need more tools, more culture around having healthy conversations about life and afterlife,” Pierce Freelon said.

The Freelons say while this is an album for their ancestors, it’s also a love letter for the city of Durham. It was recorded in the Bull City and includes Durham artists and references.

If they bring home the award, they hope it’ll be a win not just for them but for the community.
