Not a lot of colleges have a rich history of winning National Championships, but North Carolina isn’t one of them. The Tar Heels’ six championships are the third most all time, and they could make another title run this season if everything goes according to plan.
Of course, UNC also has a history of churning out NBA superstars, with one such guy being Rasheed Wallace . While Sheed didn’t win a championship during his time in college, the Tar Heels’ 1993 victory actually played a massive role in getting him to commit to play for them.
Wallace tells an incredible Dean Smith story
From 1961-1997, North Carolina’s men’s basketball program was led by Dean Smith , who helped the school win a pair of National Championships during his time with them. The second of those came in 1993 when they picked up a 77-71 victory over Michigan.
Wallace was still in high school at the time but was set to attend college the following year. Sheed was a highly recruited player out of high school, so much so that Smith decided it was imperative to pay Wallace a visit just a day after he won his championship.
