Two respected physicians, William Berry, MD, and Gregory Georgiade, MD, both graduates of the 1973 Duke University Medical School class, have retired. Their retirement comes as Duke University celebrates its centennial and the Duke Cancer Institute marks its 50th anniversary.

Berry, a medical oncologist, retired on December 31, 2023, 50 years after starting his residency at Duke University School of Medicine. He dedicated his career to treating Duke Raleigh patients with various types of cancer. Georgiade, a plastic and surgical oncologist, retired from clinical practice on July 1, 2023. He spent his entire 50-year career at Duke and held many leadership roles at Duke University Hospital.

Berry made significant contributions to prostate cancer treatment throughout his career. In 1979, when he started his private practice in Raleigh, North Carolina, there were no approved medical therapies for prostate cancer. Over time, Berry played a key role in testing many drugs that are now approved for treating prostate cancer. His own prostate cancer diagnosis in 2001 further solidified his dedication to this field.
