The Durham County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) in North Carolina has retrieved a stolen vehicle from Orange County. The vehicle was located early in the morning on Old Oxford Road near Dearborn Drive. This recovery is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to tackle vehicle theft.
In 2023, the office recovered 252 stolen vehicles in Durham County. Sheriff Clarence Birkhead acknowledged the difficulty of dealing with vehicle theft and committed to continue collaborating with local and regional partners. He also encouraged the public to report any unusual activity.
The department stressed the need for vehicle owners to take steps to prevent theft. They noted that securing vehicles and removing personal items can greatly reduce the risk of theft.
The office also advised not to leave firearms in unattended vehicles. If unavoidable, the firearm should be kept in a secure lockbox. This guidance is part of a wider initiative to decrease crime and enhance public safety.
The department invites anyone with information about vehicle theft to contact them or dial 911. The continued partnership between law enforcement and the public is key to addressing vehicle theft and other crimes in Durham County.
