Local NCCU School of Education Secures $300,000 Grant to Enhance Teacher Training and Address Educational Equity in Durham Public Schools

The School of Education at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has received a $300,000 grant from the Branch Alliance for Educator Diversity. The grant will be used to improve teacher training standards, focusing on creating adaptable and empathetic educators. The funds will also enable NCCU to broaden its existing partnership with Durham Public Schools, aiming to address educational equity for all students, from prekindergarten to high school.

Audrey Beard, the dean of the School of Education, spoke about the partnership with the Branch Alliance for Educator Diversity. She stressed the need to provide teacher candidates with the skills and knowledge to succeed in diverse classrooms. The collaboration with Durham Public Schools will also improve the teaching and learning experience in the city.

The grant team, led by Nigel Pierce and Gregory Downing from NCCU’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction, is dedicated to a collaborative approach. This involves strategic cooperation and engagement among stakeholders to implement effective, sustainable programs that enhance student learning and achievement.
