Free fans help Alamance County families in need stay cool

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — When it comes to staying cool in the heat, many people turn on the air conditioning.

There are some families who don’t have that option.

The thermostat inside Beth Delano’s home in Graham is set at 74 degrees, but, unfortunately, it never reaches that number.

“Because it just runs and runs and can never catch up, and we don’t have a lot of trees just across the street that block the sun off the front of the house … Even on the inside, we cover the windows, and it’s still that hot,” Delano said.

Delano is a single mother. She takes care of her son Bobby who is blind. She says their financial situation prevents them from fixing the AC unit.

“I had been sick for a while, and I had just gotten my real estate license, so we’re just kind of starting off again,” Delano said.

Thanks to a box fan donation from the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office to the Green Level Community Center, people in similar situations took advantage of a fan giveaway Wednesday afternoon.
