North Carolina Hospital Tops in Patient Safety. Here’s how others locally compare.

UNC Health Rex in Raleigh has once again been named one of the best hospitals in the country by the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit that focuses on patient safety.

According to Leapfrog’s latest report, UNC Health Rex earned straight A’s, making it one of only 15 hospitals nationwide to maintain this record since the evaluations began in 2012. It’s the only hospital in North Carolina with this distinction.

Leapfrog’s report, which evaluates hospitals twice a year, focuses on key safety factors like preventable errors, accidents, infections, and the systems hospitals use to prevent harm.

In addition to UNC Health Rex, several other hospitals in the Raleigh area earned high marks, including WakeMed Raleigh Campus, Duke Raleigh Hospital, and Rex Holly Springs Hospital, which all received A grades.

Granville Medical Center, Oxford received a D grade.

Although hospitals are making progress in some areas, including reductions in infection rates, patient safety remains a challenge post-pandemic. Leah Binder, president of the Leapfrog Group, stressed the importance of continued efforts to improve safety.
