Officials Under Fire After Controversial Final Play of SMU-Duke

In a game where one team forced six turnovers, the winner wasn’t decided until the final play, which occurred in overtime.

The Duke Blue Devils (6-1) were hoping to pull off a Week 9 upset against a new ACC foe in the No. 22 SMU Mustangs. The Blue Devil defense did everything it could to put the team in a position to win, forcing six Mustangs turnovers.

However, it was Duke who needed a fourth-quarter touchdown and successful two-point conversion to tie the game up with 9:02 remaining. The Blue Devils did have a chance at a go-ahead field goal with 2:57 remaining, but ended up missing.

In overtime, the Mustangs scored in two plays to go up 28-21, but Duke quarterback Maalik Murphy needed just one play to answer as he found Eli Pancol for a 25-yard touchdown. Rather than going to a second overtime, Duke coach Manny Diaz decided to go for two and the win.

On a play that saw Murphy roll out to his right, the Texas transfer attempted to connect with Pancol again. Unfortunately for Duke, the pass fell incomplete, giving the team its second loss on the year. However, many social media refs are getting on the ACC officials for not calling a pass interference on SMU during the play.
