The Wake Forest Police Department will begin accepting applications for its junior cadet program starting Jan. 2.
The department is seeking young people who have completed eighth grade, actively maintain a āCā average in school, and are between the ages of 14-20 to participate in the program, among other requirements.
The initiative aims to foster interest in knowledge among the next generation of law enforcement officials. Through training and instruction, the cadets gain practical knowledge of and hands-on experience in the career of law enforcement.
Those in the program work to assist the Wake Forest Police Department in ensuring safety at community events, and have the opportunity to ride with officers of the patrol division during their shifts.
The program replaces the Police Explorer program. While the cadet program is similar to the Police Explorer program, it is not affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America.
Wake Forest Police Junior Cadets meet at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at the Police Headquarters, 745 Merritt Capital Dr., Suite 113 in Wake Forest.
