The Triangle could get a quick glimpse of snowfall as a blast of Arctic air blows through, but nothing that could lead to sledding or even a decent snowball fight.
The National Weather Service in Raleigh calls for a mix of rain and freezing rain Sunday afternoon, and the freezing portion of the forecast will likely happen closer to the Virginia border around Roxboro.
Temperatures are only expected to dip as low as 35 Sunday night, meaning it’s too warm in the upper atmosphere for ice crystals to form.
“Most locations should end up remaining all rain,” said Tom Green, meteorologist. “At least Sunday night.”
But Maybe Monday
That said, Green added that the clouds could end up being cold enough on the back end of the storm Monday night. That’s the best chance for snowflakes in the air.
“We could end up seeing some snowflakes falling,” Green said. “But we’re not expecting much in the way of accumulation.”
Arctic blast
Accuweather forecasters sent out an email Thursday warning of a moisture-rich storm system moving across the country from the west that could complicate things, creating the possibility for ice and snow in the North Carolina mountains and along the Virginia border nearly to the coast.
