Durham City Council approves rezoning proposal after 3 hours of public comment

Durham City Council passed two residential rezoning proposals at its Monday meeting — one in a narrow 4-3 vote after three hours of public concern over potential impacts on residents and the environment, and the other unanimously.

In a 4-3 vote, the council approved annexing and rezoning 86.41 acres in eastern Durham bordering Wake Forest Highway and Kemp Road.

Developer Thomas and Hutton’s proposed development would construct up to 50 single-family homes, 225 townhouses, 225 apartments, two playgrounds, a public greenway and 12,000 square feet of retail on the land. At least 25 housing units will be affordable to households with 80% area median income or less.
