Your first week of August in Durham arts

While the second week of August brings an unpredictable mix of rain and shine to Durham, it certainly doesn’t lack fun, arts-filled events, with activities ranging from Broadway musicals to action-packed classics.

From Aug. 5 to Aug. 9, “The Wiz” will be on Broadway at DPAC. Returning to the stage after 40 years, this Tony Award-winning musical adapts and puts a unique spin on the classic tale of “The Wizard of Oz.” “The Wiz” takes place in Harlem and incorporates soul and gospel music. The musical’s all-Black cast also includes director Schele Williams, known for the musical “The Notebook,” and JaQuel Knight, best known for choreographing Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies.” Described as “eye-popping” by the Chicago Tribune and featuring “powerhouse performances,” according to the Baltimore Sun, this show is an opportunity Durhamites can’t miss.

Starting this Saturday, Aug. 9, our very own Nasher Museum of Art will feature the exhibit “Abstraction at Mid-Century.” The exhibition will feature modern and contemporary art focused on abstract expressionism — an art movement that followed World War II that includes “loose brushwork and gestural strokes.” “Abstraction at Mid-Century” displays various interpretations of abstract expressionism, including sculptures by John Rhoden and Manuel Neri, as well as oil paintings by Byron Browne and Roy Lichtenstein, who has been featured at the Nasher before in 2022…
