Hidden today behind a wall of bamboo and tangled vines, the J.B. Mills House in Chatham County, North Carolina, is easy to overlook. But a century ago, it stood proudly at the crossroads of two busy highways near what is now the Jordan Lake Recreation Area.

After sitting empty for decades and weathering years of neglect, the home seemed to have a chance at revival when a real estate developer purchased the property and agreed to save it. Now, however, local reports indicate the developer has backed out of that commitment, leaving the house facing almost certain demolition…
