Raleigh bridge named to honor fallen Wake County Sheriff’s deputy killed in 2022

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A bridge in Raleigh now bears the name of a fallen Wake County deputy.

The Auburn Knightdale Road Bridge in Raleigh is now called Deputy Ned P. Byrd Bridge. He was shot and killed while on patrol on Aug. 11, 2022.

Springfield Baptist Church was filled on Friday with hundreds of friends, family, law enforcement and public officials to honor their hero. After the service, the group went to the bridge for a dedication ceremony.

“He was everybody’s friend. If you knew him as a friend, you were family. He would do anything for anybody. He was always there for everybody. He was always the rock everybody leaned on,” his sister Mignon Byrd said…
