Scammers continue to target people indiscriminately, prompting the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina to issue a warning on social media. “The reality is scammers are coming for your money, no matter who you are, or what you do, and it makes us VERY angry,” the post reads. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office advises residents to be cautious of calls from unfamiliar sources, especially those involving money schemes or unrealistic offers.
The latest scam operates with a cool sophistication, where an individual, fresh from making bond, is pitched with an enticing offer to enroll in a diversion program—these programs exist legitimately to mitigate the legal repercussions for offenders, but, the caller is a sham, a phantom claiming a role in the wheelworks of justice. Although most are aware that diversion programs are “a thing,” the ins and outs are not common knowledge and the sheriff’s office has decided to stay mum about the exact process of program enrollment, because clearly, even the scammers are tuned in, parsing social media for their next ploy, and they “have AI for that,” the department quips…
