‘Building trust’: City could remove Durham Freeway in effort to reconnect destroyed communities

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — The City of Durham is unveiling new plans that could potentially get rid of the Durham Freeway altogether.

The road serves tens of thousands of drivers each day. But its development took a significant toll on communities around it, displacing some of the people living there.

Where the Durham Freeway stands today, areas like the Hayti community used to be lined with thriving businesses and homes. Hayti Reborn co-founder Henry McKoy is focused on bringing that back.

“If you think about the history of the Hayti community, when the Durham Freeway came through, it destroyed an estimation of about 4,000 homes, 500 businesses,” McKoy said. “There’s an aspect of this that looks at what justice looks like. Does justice look like repairing that community? Does it look like putting those communities back together that were destroyed by the highway?”
