Man struck and killed by an Amtrak train near Duke’s campus, police say

A man was hit and killed by a passenger train while walking on the railroad tracks near Duke University’s East Campus on Tuesday evening.

The man was pronounced dead at the site of the collision near the intersection of Ninth and Pettigrew streets, according to Durham police.

Amtrak’s Piedmont was traveling eastbound toward downtown about 5:39 p.m. when the train’s operator saw the man and blew the horn, according to police. The man failed to yield, police said…
