Durham County Invites Residents to Honor Local Veterans with Operation Green Light and Veterans Day Celebration in November

Jonathan Crooms, Veteran Services Supervisor at the Durham County Department of Veteran Services, has announced updates on the county’s plans to honor its more than 15,000 veterans and their families in November. November is recognized nationally as Veterans & Military Families Month, following a presidential proclamation. Durham County will join other communities in recognizing the service of veterans and active-duty military personnel.

Veterans Day, first observed as Armistice Day on November 11, 1918, is a federal holiday. Crooms highlighted that the holiday often coincides with other national and religious events. He noted that service members may spend time away from family during this period.

Durham County will participate in Operation Green Light, a national initiative led by the National Association of Counties (NACo). The campaign asks residents, businesses, and organizations to display green lights from November 4 to 11 to show support for veterans. County buildings and landmarks will be lit in green.
