Mandalas and Maurice Ravel highlight this week in Duke Arts

From concerts honoring celebrated composers to a mandala-making session and pottery workshop, the week ahead brings music and art to Duke students’ doorsteps. In order to spread the word to the Duke community, Recess has put together this list.

At 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday there will be a class on mandala-making, taught by doctoral candidate Anvita Kulshrestha in the Trent Semans Center for Health Education as part of the Duke School of Medicine Workshop Series. The workshop describes the mandala-making process as “art meditation” and “very calming.”

Next, Dan Hale, an assistant professor of animation at UNC Greensboro, will be visiting Duke to speak about his work, which focuses on bringing digital 3D animation into physical 3D space. The talk will be on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Smith Warehouse. Thirty minutes later, Joseph Winters, Alexander F. Hehmeyer associate professor of religious studies and African and African American studies, will lead a discussion on James Baldwin’s “The Fire Next Time,” also in Smith Warehouse. At 6 p.m., River Takada will lead a workshop in the Arts Annex on practical mending and hand sewing, with a focus on patching everyday items…
