Column: The ‘Sound of Music’ and what it means to be a bystander

Spoilers ahead for “The Sound of Music”, although since it was released in 1965, if you don’t know the plot, well…

I’m at the Durham Performing Arts Center watching “The Sound of Music,” all the way in the back upper balcony six seats away from my friend because I bought tickets 20 hours prior and couldn’t snag a closer option. The person in front of me obscures half of my vision and I can’t hear what the actors are saying without “IRL” subtitles, but the singing is splendid and the night is fleeting.

An hour and a half into the performance, I realize: wait, am I a Nazi?
