People with close ties to a slain hospital police officer are at a loss for why he is gone.
Garner police investigators said Roger Smith, 59, was shot and killed at the WakeMed Garner Healthplex while on the job Saturday morning. They said a struggle ensued between him and the suspect, Benji Martin Jr., which led to Smith’s death.
